Magic Food Bus

We are very excited to partner with Healthy Peninsula to bring the Magic Food Bus to Deer Isle during the summer!

Starting June 22, the Magic Food Bus will visit 4 neighborhoods on the island to deliver library books and fresh, local fruits and vegetables. Visit us before taking a swim at the Lily Pond, when you’re out running errands, or while you’re getting off work in Stonington. This is a great way for kids and adults to try out some new food and to get books for summer reading.

In addition to the oppportunity to try free fresh fruits and vegetables, we also offer sample dishes and recipes to prepare at home.

This very popular and innovative program began in 2011, when Sedgwick School Librarian Margaret Bixby combined two of her passions, books and fresh food, to create a traveling library and farmstand. Following the success in Sedgwick, the Food Bus expanded to Deer Isle in 2012 and now serves an average of 75 islanders every week.

The Magic Food Bus would not be possible without the work of numerous partners and collaborators including: Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary SchoolFarmdropHealthy Acadia Gleaning InitiativeHealthy Peninsula, and many local farmers, food producers, and home gardeners.

Through our work with the summer Magic Food Bus and the year round Island Pantry, we provide weekly oppportunities for islanders to try free fresh vegetables and fruit, along with sample dishes and recipes to prepare at home. We are able to give our neighbors the opportunity to take advantage of local resources in ways which otherwise might not be available to them, while developing and expanding their culinary skills for home cooking.

We host two major winter meals, a free three course lunch as part of Winterfest and Men Who Cook, which gathers together island men to compete with each other for the best dishes at a large public supper. These dinners enable a wide range of local community members to enjoy a variety of dishes prepared by talented professional and amateur local chefs.
