Friends of Edible Island,


Your generous support allows us to continue our critical programming to support our local food system and its inherent resources, values, and opportunities in Deer Isle and the Blue Hill Peninsula.


Edible Island’s core programming is culinary and nutritional education for school-age children. We currently work in four schools: the Brooklin School, Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School, Deer Isle-Stonington High School, and Sedgwick Elementary. We have also integrated our programming into several summer camps. Edible Island hosts adult cooking classes and community culinary events, including the annual Men Who Cook event and Winterfest lunch. Edible Island also partners with the Magic Food Bus program to deliver fresh produce and books to the community and with the Island Pantry to offer recipe sampling.


We are a small organization, and the vast majority of our funding goes to support programming. Your contribution pays for ingredients for our cooking classes, staff time for our instructors and management, and other vital costs that allow us to continue to work to bring good food to our local community.


Ingrid Bengis-Palei Memorial Fund for Education


Edible Island has created a Memorial Fund for Education to honor our late founder Ingrid Bengis-Palei, who passed away in July 2017. Ingrid founded this organization in 2009 to further her passionate commitment to promoting healthy, sustainable cuisine and promoting our rich, regional food sources. Since then, Edible Island’s educational programs have centered on food as the focus for a spectrum of critical issues. Ingrid always believed that food is at the intersection of health and wellness, care for the environment, economic development, and social justice. This Memorial Fund will honor Ingrid’s memory and her passion for her community. The Fund will support Edible Island’s education programming and staffing to enable the organization to grow sustainably.
