A whole day of events; stimulating presentations in the morning, a delicious soup and salad farm lunch using all local produce and a variety of excursions in the afternoon

Eliot Coleman & Barbara Damrosch


Owners of Four Season Farm, a year-round market garden on Cape Rosier. Eliot bought and cleared the wooded land in 1968 from Helen and Scott Nearing, authors of Living the Good Life, and the farm he created has since become a model for small-scale sustainable agriculture. The author of the New Organic Grower, Four Season Harvest, and The Winter Harvest Handbook, Eliot is known internationally as a leader of the organic movement. Barbara is the author of the best-selling guide, The Garden Primer, recently revised, as well as Theme Gardens. She writes a weekly column for the Washington Post called “A Cook’s Garden”, which runs in the Ellsworth American as “Kitchen Garden”. She has been farming with Eliot since their marriage in 1991. Both write and consult widely on farming and gardening.

You’ll take home recipes and a resource list, and absorb a wealth of information that will help you identify, gather and use this bounty confidently, responsibly, and safely.
     
Ingrid Bengis-Palei -"Tales of a Fishmonger - How It All Started and Continues"  
Ingrid Bengis started her Stonington seafood business twenty five years ago. Although she is a legend among America's top chefs, little is known locally about how that came about. She will talk about how her passion for local seafood, working only with local fishermen and promoting the unique marine character of this area and its community, influenced chefs who were among the first to discover and support high quality, genuinely fresh American seafood in their kitchens.
     
Aaron Dority and Ginny Olsen  
AARON DORITY is the Downeast Groundfish Initiative Project Director for Penobscot East Resource Center. The Groundfish Initiative is a major campaign to rebuild a sustainable groundfish fishery in eastern Maine as part of Penobscot East’s work to secure a future for the fishing communities in this region. GINNY OLSEN - owner with her husband Blaine Olsen of Oceanville Seafood in Stonington has been a persistent activist organizing conservation efforts for local shellfish. Aaron and Ginny will talk about their work on the regeneration of local shellfish stocks and groundfish in our area.
     
There will be tours of the school greenhouse and composting projects during breaks
